The Earth is Doomed

“Theoretical physicist Stephen Hawking, a man with an I.Q of 160, is giving humanity a tall order: Colonize Mars in the next century or watch as life on Earth fizzles out. After last year claiming that humans have 1,000 years left on Earth, Hawking says in a new documentary that we instead have about 100 years until we’ll need to jump ship as Earth is overwhelmed by overpopulation, climate change, disease, weapons of mass destruction, and artificial intelligence.”

  Stephen Hawking says we have only 100 years left on this planet.  He says we need to build rocket ships and go somewhere else before life on Earth is no more.  Hawking says our planet is doomed and space is our only hope.

  Well, the Bible says Earth is doomed as well.  Peter writes in 2 Peter 3:10 (NASB95) saying, “ ... the day of the Lord will come like a thief, in which the heavens will pass away with a roar and the elements will be destroyed with intense heat, and the earth and its works will be burned up.”

  The earth will be destroyed one day, but Jesus said in Matthew 24:35-36 (NASB95) , “Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will not pass away.  But of that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels of heaven, nor the Son, but the Father alone.”

  In other words, the earth will be destroyed but no one but God the Father knows the exact time.  The beginning of the destruction of this world could be a thousand years away, a hundred years away, a few months away, or even only a week away.  But a rocket ship isn’t going to save any of us.  Mars isn’t the answer.  Jesus is.

  The Apostle Paul writes in 1 Thessalonians 4:16-18 (NASB95), “For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first.  Then we who are alive and remain will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air, and so we shall always be with the Lord.  Therefore comfort one another with these words.”

  It’s a comfort to know that regardless of how frightening circumstances on Earth may become, we have a home in Heaven and Jesus Himself is prepared to come and take us away from the judgment that will fall upon this planet.

  We don’t need a spaceship or a time machine; we have Jesus.

As Leila Morris wrote;

Jesus is coming to earth again--

What if it were today?

Coming in power and love to reign--

What if it were today?

Coming to claim His chosen Bride,

All the redeemed and purified,

Over this whole earth scattered wide--

What if it were today?

Are you ready?  Are your friends, family, fellow students, and coworkers ready?  There will be no time to pack a suitcase when the trumpet sounds.  Today is the day to get ready and stay ready.
