PURIFIED Sodium Bicarbonate

     Consider the following news story.

“The ‘simplest of drugs’ is in short supply at hospitals around the country, causing crucial surgeries and other treatments to be reprioritized, and it is a cheap drug whose main ingredient may be found in your own pantry, the New York Times reports.”

“That drug is sodium bicarbonate solution, otherwise known as baking soda, which is used in chemo regimens, as a poison antidote, and to help patients whose blood has veered into acidic ranges, among other uses.”

“But the nation’s two lone suppliers, Pfizer and Amphastar, are suddenly unable to give medical facilities what they need, causing those facilities to hoard what’s left in their own cabinets.”

Now here is the interesting thing.  There is plenty of sodium bicarbonate in this world.  Just go to the grocery store and you will find box after box.  So why is there a shortage of sodium bicarbonate in certain hospitals?  The answer is that hospitals must use a PURIFIED form of  sodium bicarbonate.  That PURIFIED form must then be properly formulated for hospital use.  Phizer and Amphastar do that.  All the sodium bicarbonate in the world does the medical community no good unless it is PURIFIED.

In a similar sense, there are plenty of people in this world who can serve, but God requires a HOLY PEOPLE to do His work.  Sadly, there are many important Kingdom tasks which go undone today because there is a shortage of HOLY PEOPLE.

In Ezekiel 22:24-31 (NLT) the Lord said to Ezekiel,  “Son of man, give the people of Israel this message: In the day of my indignation, you will be like a polluted land, a land without rain.  Your princes plot conspiracies just as lions stalk their prey. They devour innocent people, seizing treasures and extorting wealth. They make many widows in the land.  Your priests have violated my instructions and defiled my holy things. They make no distinction between what is holy and what is not. And they do not teach my people the difference between what is ceremonially clean and unclean. They disregard my Sabbath days so that I am dishonored among them.  Your leaders are like wolves who tear apart their victims. They actually destroy people’s lives for money!”

“And your prophets cover up for them by announcing false visions and making lying predictions. They say, ‘My message is from the Sovereign LORD,’ when the LORD hasn’t spoken a single word to them.  Even common people oppress the poor, rob the needy, and deprive foreigners of justice.”   “I looked for someone who might rebuild the wall of righteousness that guards the land. I searched for someone to stand in the gap in the wall so I wouldn’t have to destroy the land, but I found no one.  So now I will pour out my fury on them, consuming them with the fire of my anger. I will heap on their heads the full penalty for all their sins.  I, the Sovereign LORD, have spoken!”  What a tragedy, God found no one qualified to stand in the gap.

2 Timothy 2:21 (NASB95) says, “ ... if anyone cleanses himself from these [worldly and sinful] things, he will be a vessel for honor, sanctified, useful to the Master, prepared for every good work.”  God has important work for us to do, but He will not use a corrupted and contaminated vessel.  We must be holy because He is holy.  Let us pray that God would cleanse and sanctify us for His glory and His service.  Let us pray that God would find us qualified to stand in the gap.
