Family Table Talk: Working With God

Scripture

John 15:5
“I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit.”

Family Devotional Reading

God never intended for us to live the Christian life alone. The Holy Spirit helps us grow and change from the inside out. But spiritual growth doesn’t happen by accident. It happens when we cooperate with God in everyday life.

One simple way to do that is to ask two questions:
  1. What does God want to do in me today?
  2. What does God want to do through me today?

Before God works through us, He first wants to work in us—filling us with His grace, love, and hope. When our hearts are filled with Him, that love begins to flow into our relationships.

God often grows us through the people closest to us—our family, friends, small groups, and church community. These relationships aren’t projects to fix people. They are opportunities to build trust, care for one another, and grow together.

When we spend time with God, read His Word, and practice loving others daily, we slowly become more like Jesus. Real transformation doesn’t just happen in big moments. It happens in small, faithful choices every day.

Conversation Starters

For Younger Kids
  • What is one way God helps us grow?
  • Who are people in our family we can show love to today?

For Older Kids
  • Why do you think God wants to change our hearts before He works through us?
  • How can our family help each other grow closer to God?

For Teens
  • What do you think it means to cooperate with the Holy Spirit in everyday life?
  • What are some relationships where God may want to work through you right now?

For Adults
  • Which of the two questions do you ask more often: what God wants to do in you or through you?
  • How can our family intentionally invest in relationships this week?

Family Activity: The Two Questions

At dinner or before bed tonight, have each family member answer these two questions:
  1. What is one thing God might want to do in me this week?
(Example: be more patient, trust Him more, forgive someone.)

  2. What is one way God could work through me this week?
(Example: encourage a friend, help a neighbor, serve someone in the family.)

Write the answers down and pray for each other.

End by asking God to help your family grow together and love others well.
