Short Devotional Reading

When we think about Jesus on the cross, it can feel like something went terribly wrong. But the truth is—it was never an accident. From the very beginning, God had a plan to rescue His people.

Just like in the first Passover in Egypt, where God rescued His people from slavery, Jesus became our perfect sacrifice to rescue us from sin, fear, and death. He didn’t panic or run from what was coming. Instead, He stayed steady, faithful, and focused on God.

When we follow Jesus, we’re stepping into that same story. It’s not always easy—there will be challenges—but we’re not alone. God gives us strength and writes His truth on our hearts so we can know Him personally.

Because of Jesus, we are no longer defined by our past. We are chosen, loved, and part of God’s family. And every time we remember Him—like in the Lord’s Supper—we celebrate not just what He has done, but what He is still going to do.

Conversation Starters

For Younger Kids (5–9):
  • Why do you think Jesus chose to obey God even when it was hard?
  • What does it mean that Jesus rescues us?
  • How can we remember Jesus during our day?

For Preteens (10–12):
  • What does it look like to stay calm and trust God when things are hard?
  • Why is it important that Jesus’ death was part of God’s plan?
  • What do you think it means that God writes His truth on our hearts?

For Teens:
  • What “terms and conditions” do you think come with following Jesus?
  • Where do you feel opposition or pressure in your faith right now?
  • How does your identity as part of God’s “royal priesthood” change how you live?

For Adults:
  • Where are you tempted to lose consistency in your walk with God under pressure?
  • How does understanding the cross as God’s plan (not tragedy) deepen your trust?
  • In what ways are you living out your identity as God’s treasured possession?
