Real Freedom

1 Corinthians 6

May 24, 2026

Big Idea

Our culture says freedom means “do whatever makes you happy.” But 1 Corinthians 6 teaches that real freedom is not being controlled by our desires. True freedom is living the way God created us to live. Because we belong to Jesus, our identity shapes our choices.

Read Together

Read selected portions of 1 Corinthians 6:
  • Verses 1–8
  • Verses 9–11
  • Verses 12–20
You can summarize parts for younger kids if needed.

Talk About It

For Preschoolers
  1. Who do we belong to?
  2. Does Jesus help us make good choices?
  3. Should we hurt people or help people?
  4. What are some ways we can honor God with our bodies?
  5. Can Jesus make us clean and new?

For Elementary Kids
  1. Why do you think Paul wanted Christians to solve problems peacefully?
  2. What does it mean that we were “washed” and made new by Jesus?
  3. Have you ever let a feeling or desire control your attitude or actions?
  4. Why do you think God cares about what we do with our bodies?
  5. What is the difference between “I can do this” and “This is good for me”?

For Teenagers
  1. How does our culture define freedom differently than Paul does in this chapter?
  2. What are some desires or habits that can begin to “master” people today?
  3. Why is identity so important in shaping behavior?
  4. How does remembering “you were bought with a price” change the way we view relationships, sexuality, and choices?
  5. Why do you think Christians sometimes prefer winning arguments over loving people?

For Parents & Adults
  1. Are there areas where comfort, entertainment, approval, or desire have too much control in your life?
  2. How can families practice healthy conflict resolution instead of attacking or avoiding one another?
  3. What does it look like to honor God with our bodies in everyday life?
  4. How can we help our children understand that Christianity is not merely rule-following, but living from a new identity in Christ?
  5. Where do you need to more fully believe that transformation is possible through the gospel?

Family Activity

Take a piece of paper and draw two columns:
  • “Things That Control People”
  • “Ways Jesus Gives Freedom”
As a family, fill in both columns together. Talk about how Jesus helps us live with wisdom, peace, purity, and purpose instead of being controlled by sin or selfishness.

Examples:
  • Anger → Forgiveness
  • Addiction → Self-control
  • Fear of approval → Identity in Christ
  • Selfishness → Serving others

Pray Together

Jesus, thank You for making us new. Thank You that our past does not define us because You have washed, sanctified, and justified us. Help us live in true freedom — not controlled by selfish desires, but shaped by Your love and truth. Teach our family to honor You with our bodies, our choices, and our relationships. Help us become more like You every day. Amen.
