Read Scripture: 1 Corinthians 8Key Verse"Knowledge puffs up, but love builds up." — 1 Corinthians 8:1Family DevotionalOne of the greatest gifts Jesus gives us is freedom. We don't earn God's love by following a long list of rules—we are saved by His grace. But Paul reminds us that Christian freedom isn't just about asking, "Can I do this?" It's also about asking, "How will this affect someone else?"In Corinth, some Christians understood that idols were not real gods, so they had no problem eating meat that had been offered in pagan temples. They were correct. But not everyone had reached that understanding. For some believers, eating that meat reminded them of their old life before Jesus and pulled them toward sin. Paul tells those with greater understanding to put love ahead of their personal freedom.Paul says, "Knowledge puffs up, but love builds up." Knowing the right answer is good, but if that knowledge makes us proud or careless toward others, we've missed the heart of Jesus. Jesus never used truth to make people feel small. He used truth to help people grow.Today, we may not argue about meat sacrificed to idols, but we face similar choices. We have freedom in many areas, yet we should always ask whether our words, actions, or attitudes help others follow Jesus. Sometimes love means giving up something we enjoy so someone else can grow stronger in their faith.Following Jesus means choosing people over preferences. Love asks, "What will help this person know Jesus better?"That's the kind of freedom that reflects Christ.Discussion QuestionsPreschool (3–5 years)What does it mean to be kind to someone? How can you help a friend feel loved this week?Elementary (6–10 years)Have you ever chosen to share or give something up to help someone else? Why is being loving more important than always getting your own way?Preteens (11–12 years)What's the difference between being right and being loving? Can you think of a time when your choices affected someone else, even if you didn't mean to?Teens (13–18 years)Why do you think Paul says love is more important than simply knowing the right answer? How can social media, politics, entertainment, or personal opinions become more important than loving other believers? Is there an area where you could willingly limit your own freedom to encourage someone else's faith? For the Whole FamilyWho is someone God has placed in your life that needs your patience, encouragement, or understanding? This week, what is one way our family can choose love over simply insisting on our own rights?Family PrayerHeavenly Father, thank You for the freedom we have through Jesus. Help us never use that freedom to think only about ourselves. Give us hearts that care about the people around us. Teach us to speak with kindness, act with humility, and make choices that help others grow closer to You. May our love build others up and point them to Jesus every day. Amen.
