Bible Readings: Romans 8:26-34; Psalm 91:9-16

14“Because he loves me,” says the Lord, “I will rescue him;
     I will protect him, for he acknowledges my name.
15 He will call on me, and I will answer him;
     I will be with him in trouble,
     I will deliver him and honor him.

16 With long life I will satisfy him
     and show him my salvation.”
Psalm 91:14-16

31 What, then, shall we say in response to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? 32 He who did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all—how will he not also, along with him, graciously give us all things? 33 Who will bring any charge against those whom God has chosen? It is God who justifies. 34 Who then is the one who condemns? No one. Christ Jesus who died—more than that, who was raised to life—is at the right hand of God and is also interceding for us.  Romans 8:31-34

Psalm 91 opens with a declaration from the Psalmist that the Lord is a place of “refuge”:

Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High
     will rest in the shadow of the Almighty.
 I will say of the Lord, “He is my refuge and my fortress,
     my God, in whom I trust.”
Psalm 91:1-2

This is a declaration of trust.  But what the Psalmist also reminds us is that this relationship with the Lord, built on trust, comes with promises that God will intercede on behalf of those who take refuge in him.  Because he loves me…
·       I will rescue him
·       I will protect him
·       I will answer him
·       I will be with him
·       I will deliver him and honor him
·       I will satisfy him (with long life)
·       [I will] show him my salvation
Because of Jesus Christ, says the writer of Romans, we too can know God as our place of refuge: “If God is for us, who can be against us?”  And Jesus is at the right hand of God…interceding for us.  All of the wonderful promises of God in Psalm 91 are ultimately fulfilled in Jesus Christ.

What is it that you are facing today? In what ways do you need rest?  Shelter?  Protection?  Faith in Jesus Christ and prayer is the way that we take refuge in God.  Bring your fears and struggles to God. You can know that Jesus is interceding for you even now!

Heavenly Father, you are my place of refuge.  May my life always be in your shelter - may my trust always be in you.  Thank you showing me your salvation in Jesus Christ and that he continues to intercede for me even now.  Hear the prayers of my heart and lead me by your grace.
Amen.
