Day 20 - Thursday

The Journey - Lent 2024

By Aaron Austin | March 07, 2024
Bible Readings: John 14:1-7; Psalm 139:7-12

 Where can I go from your Spirit?
     Where can I flee from your presence?
 If I go up to the heavens, you are there;
     if I make my bed in the depths, you are there.

 If I rise on the wings of the dawn,
     if I settle on the far side of the sea,

 even there your hand will guide me,
     your right hand will hold me fast.
 If I say, “Surely the darkness will hide me
     and the light become night around me,”
 even the darkness will not be dark to you;
     the night will shine like the day,
     for darkness is as light to you.
Psalm 139:7-12

Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.  If you really know me, you will know my Father as well. From now on, you do know him and have seen him.”.  John 14:6-7

In our Psalm for today, David is describing the sheer immensity of God.  It doesn’t matter where David goes, God is there.  There is no limit to God.  Even darkness cannot hide him away from God’s sight.  Even if I tried, I could not hide from you!

For David, the way to God was clear – God was everywhere.  Because of sin, there was part of him that wanted to try and hide from God.  Realizing that this was impossible, he expresses his desire for God’s truth and life to make him acceptable in God’s presence:

Search me, God, and know my heart;
     test me and know my anxious thoughts.
 See if there is any offensive way in me,
     and lead me in the way everlasting.
    Psalm 139:23-24

 For the disciples, and us, Jesus is the Way, the Truth, and the Life.  Jesus is the only way to the Father.  Jesus gives the assurance that he himself, by his death and resurrection, will bring us into the “Father’s house” where there is an immensity of space for everyone (“many rooms”).  We no longer need to hide because of sin but can receive forgiveness and a new heart through faith in Jesus.

Today, spend some time reading Psalm 139 several times.  Make verses 23-24 your prayer.
