The Journey - Lent 2024

Bible Readings: Colossians 2:2-6; Psalm 140:1-8

 Keep me safe, Lord, from the hands of the wicked;
     protect me from the violent,
     who devise ways to trip my feet.
The arrogant have hidden a snare for me;
     they have spread out the cords of their net
     and have set traps for me along my path.
Psalm 140:4-5

My goal is that they may be encouraged in heart and united in love, so that they may have the full riches of complete understanding, in order that they may know the mystery of God, namely, Christ, in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge. I tell you this so that no one may deceive you by fine-sounding arguments. For though I am absent from you in body, I am present with you in spirit and delight to see how disciplined you are and how firm your faith in Christ is.  Colossians 2:2-5

At the risk of sounding like a dreary pessimist, it is obvious that there are many “traps” in our world.  The traps of wealth, success, and power are most obvious and timeless.  More subtle traps might include how we discern truth, morality, or even our own identity.  There are people, companies, organizations, etc. that use a variety of means to influence the way we think, how we feel, and ultimately the actions we take.  We are led to believe that what we are being presented has our best interest, and the interest of our society in mind.  Often, this is not the case, or it reflects a misguided understanding of truth.  Rather than a more stable society, we increasingly see instability in our world, in our relationships, and within ourselves.

The Apostle Paul, out of concern for the Church against those who would deceive with “fine-sounding arguments”, rejoices that the believers remain disciplined & grounded in their relationship with Christ – “in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge” (Colossians 2:3).

How solid is your foundation?  In ways are you struggling to discern truth?  What ways of our society feel like sinking sand to you? Ask God to encourage your heart and give you complete understanding.  In what ways might you draw closer to your church family for support?

My hope is built on nothing less
 Than Jesus' blood and righteousness
 I dare not trust the sweetest frame
 But wholly lean on Jesus' Name

Oh Christ the solid Rock I stand
 All other ground is sinking sand
 All other ground is sinking sand
