Day 37 - Holy Wednesday

The Journey - Lent 2024

Bible Readings: Luke 22:1-8; Psalm 141:1-10

Now the Festival of Unleavened Bread, called the Passover, was approaching, and the chief priests and the teachers of the law were looking for some way to get rid of Jesus, for they were afraid of the people. Then Satan entered Judas, called Iscariot, one of the Twelve. And Judas went to the chief priests and the officers of the temple guard and discussed with them how he might betray Jesus.    Luke 22:1-4

May my prayer be set before you like incense;
     may the lifting up of my hands be like the evening sacrifice.

Set a guard over my mouth, Lord;
     keep watch over the door of my lips.
 Do not let my heart be drawn to what is evil…
Psalm 141:2-4

 What was going on in the heart of Judas that would lead him to betray Jesus.  Although we are not told exactly what his reasoning was, it was the impression of the Gospel writer that Satan had “entered” Judas to ultimately bring about this act of treachery.  However, we cannot be too quick to assume that Judas is a victim in this or that he had no control over his decisions.
Satan has no real authority, except that which is given to him.
Remember – in the wilderness Satan had tempted Jesus to “bow down and worship” him (give authority to him), with the promise that Satan would give him power and authority over everything.  What Satan was offering, he has no authority to give.

Judas gave space in his heart for Satan to have control.  This space could easily be created by choices made, destructive thoughts, fear, greed, and/or jealousy…for example.  Our Psalm reminds us of the importance of guarding our hearts from that which would lead us to evil.  Don’t let fear or suspicion control your thoughts.  Are there things in life that you desire more than righteousness that comes by faith in Jesus?  Do you allow lies and negativity to fill your mind, pushing out the good things of God?

As we look towards the cross and Resurrection Sunday, may we remember the One who has authority over life and death and that His promises are trustworthy and good.  The enemy will work hard to make us think that we can have “life” in other ways, but the reality is, he will always and only take from you– he has nothing truly good to give.
Set a guard over my mouth, Lord;
     keep watch over the door of my lips.
 Do not let my heart be drawn to what is evil…
