ISSUE 19, VOLUME 4CONNECTIONSAPRIL 27TH 2025STOUT MEMORIAL WE EXIST TO SEE ALL PEOPLE FIND HOPE, HEALING AND WHOLENESS THROUGH JESUS CHRIST. A Day in the Life of a SuperintendentI was appointed by Bishop Lyght as superintendent of the Southern District in 2005. In early January of 2006, I was diagnosed with colon cancer, had a re-section, and started chemo. With appointment season, Annual Conference over and Charge Conference looming, it was tradition to have a District Picnic with pastors and families to give out charge conference papers. That fall picnic was August 18th a Friday night, the same weekend we were moving from one District Parsonage into another. We barely got beds up before we had to be at the picnic.A District committee surprised Rachel with a baby shower that evening. We get home late, had to make beds, get everyone settled into their new bedrooms. I had been hooked to a chemo bag for two days. The nurse planned to take it off the next day, Saturday at noon.Morning came knowing we had some furniture coming at 10am. Rachel and her dad did a run for some breakfast food (and coffee for Paul). As soon as they get back, Rachel begins with awful back pain. Her water breaks. Furniture arrives at 11:30. I say I can’t leave until nurse comes to unhook me. We don’t have a clock to measure contractions. Jon had already fired up his computer, so he uses that, yelling from upstairs to downstairs the minutes that pass by in between contractions. I was ready to jerk the chemo line out myself. Nurse gets there at 1. We finally get to the hospital at 2. And Julian was born at 5:03 pm, August 19th.What some would have called at “setback” in our family plans, produced a young man who is graduating this May. Water, water, everywhere and not a drop to drink!I’m sure that’s how the folks in McDowell County feel about the flooding this spring and their lack of drinking water.Because of her chemo produced neuropathy feet, Pastor Helen is going to walk 1 mile of the 3 during Annual Confer. All money raised goes to the water project. Support her with your pledge!
